NURSING LITERATURE PROPOSAL CONCEPT PAPER

Introduction

STLI is seeking interested donor organizations to fund the production of additional literature for nursing in Russian and Kyrgyz. In fulfilling this crucial need, STLI will be doing this together with various local partners, including: The Center of Family Nursing of the Kyrgyz State Medical Institute for Continuing Education (Postgraduate Institute) and the Family Group Practice Association.

Rationale

With the development and work in the Family Medicine Nursing Program in the Postgraduate Institute since 1996, we have made the following observations:
  1. The nursing profession in Kyrgyzstan is very poorly developed, with inadequate nurse training, very limited scope of permitted services, very low pay.
  2. Except for a few monographs with limited distribution, and the book Fundamentals of Nursing, of which 2700 copies have been distributed in this area, and a few journals from Russia with limited distribution, there is very little nursing literature in Russian less than 65 years old.
  3. Demand for nursing literature in Russian and Kyrgyz is high. AIHA printed additional 100 copies of Fundamentals .. last year, on their own.
  4. Where there is no Doctor, in Kyrgyz has just been distributed. This basic health care book for village workers and homes does not go far enough to meet the needs of the large numbers of health workers with more formal training.
  5. According to the Kyrgyz medical terminology committee of the Ministry of Health, translation into Kyrgyz is better done with the help of an equivalent translation in Russian.
  6. The 10 or 11 large medical uchilisches (schools of basic nursing) have requested additional copies of Fundamentals of Nursing, and the Ministry of Health has strongly requested the translation of Fundamentals of Nursing into Kyrgyz.
  7. Field evaluation of the use of Fundamentals of Nursing, has shown that, although many of the nurses have Kyrgyz as their first language, many have read, appreciated, and used Fundamentals of Nursing in Russian in their teaching and work.
  8. STLI Associates, national faculty, and a production team are already in place and working actively on this revision, so that the learning curve and costs of developing further literature in Russian would be relatively low.

Goals

  • Fund the production of Medical-Surgical Nursing in two volumes
  • Begin evaluation of other nursing materials to be developed in Kyrgyz

Approach

STLI has been involved in developing nursing materials for more than 5 years. The experience of the staff is now more mature and capable. Only high quality material and work is accepted. The process of editing is done with local staff and approved by academic institutes.

Evaluation

A formal evaluation procedure is in the process of being developed (for evaluating the accuracy, readability, usability, etc. of the translation). This will be accomplished before the final draft of this proposal is completed.

Time Frame

As of June 2005 the book is 2/3 finished. The book should be ready for printing in January 2006.

Budget / Printing costs

3000 copies of Medical-Surgical Nursing in two volumes (580 pages in each). The estimated printing cost for 3000 is $11.38/copy or a total of $34,140 and for 5000 copies is $9.00/copy or a total of $45,000 (which includes the 2 volumes or parts). Based on the first book we expect a demand of between 4000 and 5000 books.
