Third, we relied on each other more than ever and really started to work
together as a team, capitalizing on each other’s
strengths. We studied more about teams and applied what we felt appropriate
for our situation. Our logo and motto are ‘a cord of three strands
is not easily broken’ and we try to preserve this in the team
as well as in the community. This team approach is constantly evolving
as the staffing changes in numbers and experience, but remains a vital
element of project’s success.
These three factors - constantly learning, honestly facing mistakes and
working as a team – have been Osh CDC’s major strengths.
Water Supply Repairs

It was after this that we started to see more community involvement
and responsibility. Students in one village raised funds to
help refurbish their school toilet. Teachers in the same school
worked hard with Osh CDP to solve the lack of heating in winter.
In mid-2004 we started work in
a new, much poorer area, and the growth has been amazing.

With our more
developed skills and methods, and the people really seeing a need to
improve their situation, there has been significant improvement. In one
village the water supply was broken, with water flowing from only two
of the original 7 taps. With Osh CDP’s encouragement
and advice, the community worked together to address the problem, and
now we have not just 7 but 9 taps working.

We have also seen impact in relational terms, as the communities have developed trust levels, common vision and commitment to work together to resolve problems.

As we grew in our skills and knowledge, we faced another choice
. . . would we try to become more of specialists in some of the
key areas in which we worked, such as agriculture, home heating
and health?
