English Instruction
English
language instruction is highly valued in Central Asian countries,
often being key to employment, scholarships and opportunities abroad
or with joint-venture international companies. Educational resources
in most fields feature English whether in printed form of books and
journals, or as web-based information. English programs at every level
from elementary and secondary schools, to universities and adult education
plead for native English-speaking teachers to come and teach. Local English teachers
are skilled in grammar, but have had little opportunity to hear English, so that
pronunciation and conversation remain difficult.

STLI's
first expatriate personnel were teachers of English in several universities
beginning in 1993. Now nearly 20 teachers with training and experience
in teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) work in public schools, after-school English clubs, and various universities in Bishkek and Osh.
Adult education programs in English train workers after hours in several
government institutions and also train local English teachers. Villagers
are learning English as part of the community development programs.
